Self-care can sometimes feel like just another thing to add to an already full day.
But what if it didn’t have to be that way?
It’s not all spa days, massages or escaping from everyday life (although that can be lovely).
What if self-care could be found in small, quiet moments you’re already living — a pause with a warm drink, a few words written down, a gentle moment of stillness.
Doing what you normally do… but really noticing it.
These simple self-care routines are designed to fit into real life.
No pressure, no perfection — just small ways to feel calmer, more present, and a little more like yourself again.
1. A Gentle Start to the Day
Instead of immediately reaching for your phone, begin your day slowly.
Even before you get out of bed, take a moment. Stretch. Breathe.
Remind yourself that today has the potential to be a good day.
Use what you already do
Mornings can feel rushed, and it’s easy to slip into autopilot.
But your existing routines can become gentle anchors for self-care.
As you shower, notice the warmth of the water.
As you make your tea or coffee, feel the mug in your hands and notice the aroma.
As you step outside, notice the sky, the air, the sounds around you.
You’re not adding anything new — just being present to what’s already there.
A small mindset shift
Music or words can also gently shape our mood.
A favourite song or a simple playlist can help you begin the day with intention.
If you have a little more time, sit with a warm drink and write down one or more things you’re grateful for.
They don’t need to be big — the size doesn’t count, but the noticing does.
Let this be a quiet way of arriving in your day.
A gratitude journal can offer a gentle place to begin — which is why I created my Gentle Gratitude Journals.
2. A Pause in the Middle of the Day
The shift from morning to afternoon is a natural moment to pause.
Check in with yourself. How are you feeling? What do you need?
If things feel a bit too much, give yourself permission to step away.
Move to a different room. Step outside if you can.
Notice what you can see, hear, and feel.
Breathe
Take a few slow breaths, with a longer out-breath.
This simple shift helps your body relax and tells your mind that you are safe.
This isn’t about being productive.
It’s about giving your mind and body a moment to reset.
3. A Softer Evening Routine
Rather than ending the day in a rush or scrolling until you fall asleep, try creating a softer wind-down.
Choose something gentle and absorbing — something that holds your attention without overwhelming you.
This might be:
- a word search or puzzle
- colouring or drawing
- reading a few pages of a book
If your mind feels full, writing things down can help clear some space.
A gentle close to the day
When you get into bed and turn out the light, take a moment to notice your body.
Let yourself settle. Breathe.
Acknowledge all that your body has carried you through today.
Then reflect on one good moment from your day.
Let that be enough.
4. Create a Calm Corner
Self-care isn’t always something you do — sometimes it’s something you create.
Choose a small space in your home and make it feel calm and comforting.
Add things that feel meaningful to you:
- a piece of art
- a soft blanket
- a gentle light
- a plant or flowers
Return to this space when you need a moment.
Let it become somewhere that quietly supports you.
5. Quietly Reach Out
Connection doesn’t have to be big, loud or complicated.
Think of one person.
Write a short message or send a card.
It doesn’t need to be perfect — just honest. Let them know they matter to you.
These small moments of connection can mean more than we realise — both for you and for them.
A Gentle Reminder
Self-care doesn’t have to be another task on your to-do list.
It can be something softer.
Slower.
Simpler.
A few moments of noticing.
A small pause.
A gentle shift in how you move through your day.
And that really is enough.
